Pay a visit to the Tooth Relic of the Buddha. The temple is a cultural sanctuary where numerous legends, folklore and traditions are still kept alive. Later, visit the Royal Botanical Gardens, which displays the world’s best collection of orchids. Do take time out to learn about the handicraft industry (mainly focused on items of wood, brass and silver), exquisite silver or gold jewelry and precious gems of many varieties, including the world’s best blue and star sapphires. The city’s highlight that you must not miss is Esala Perahera, when a replica of the casket enclosing the Tooth is taken in procession for ten glittering nights in July/August by breathtakingly costumed dances, drummers and approximately 100 elephants.
